'Handing on the Torch': Sacred Words for a Secular World

Course Detail

Christianity is the largest movement our world has ever seen. It continues to grow at an immense pace – especially in Asia (including China), Africa and Latin America. At the same time, Christianity in the West struggles to grow and – perhaps – even to survive. In this course we consider some of the reasons for this and what it might mean for individual Christians, for churches and for Western culture, in a world where alternative beliefs are increasingly on offer.

5 SESSIONS:

Session 1 – ‘A Christian Country?’ W/c 26 February

Session 2 – ‘A Secular Society?’ W/c 4 March

Session 3 – ‘A Beleaguered Church?’ W/c 11 March

Session 4 – ‘Competing Creeds?’ W/c 18 March

Session 5 – ‘Handing on the Torch’ W/c 25 March

The cost of the course is £5 each (covering the cost of the booklet (£4) and the group cost of the CD (£12)) – to be paid on the 1st week. You may choose to share a booklet.

Lent in Weald Deanery with Bishop Trevor

Our Lenten preparation this year will be enhanced by the presence in Weald Deanery of the Bishop of Dover, Rt Revd Trevor Willmott.

In addition to our own local, parish-based, Lent Study Groups, Bishop Trevor has offered himself as available to lead a series of Lenten Reflections.  Arrangements are being put in hand for Bishop Trevor to visit six of the benefices.

It may be that you would prefer to travel through Lent following a course with your own group.  It may be that you will wish to supplement that journey by attending the Bishop’s talk most convenient to where you live.  It may be that you will wish to travel the Deanery and attend several or all of the Bishop’s talks.  So that you can begin to plan ahead the following dates and venues have been agreed with the Bishop:

23rd February   Goudhurst: St Mary the Virgin Parish Church

29th February   Headcorn / Suttons: Headcorn RC Church, Station Road

8th March         Cranbrook: St Dunstan Parish Church

15th March       Sutton Valence School Chapel

21st March       Hawkhurst: St Laurence Parish Church

28th March       Benenden: St George with St Margaret Parish Church

The Bishop’s talks will commence at 7.30pm.

In Goudhurst and Kilndown, Revd Karen will once again be co-ordinating our parochial and ecumenically organised Lent Groups.
